    Valve to piston clearance ?

Please re-read my post. I started with "Keep in mind that IF..." I posted that as a benefit to those that read this thread so they don't make a costly mistake. Having the whole story and complete information is always beneficial.

    Valve to piston clearance ?

Keep in mind that if you are using hydraulic lifters, the springs and clay will push the lifter plungers down to the bottom of the lifter bore giving you a false reading. The correct way to do this is with a light checking spring and a dial indicator on the valve retainer.

    Crane gold race rocker setup.

Hope this helps.. Crane aluminum rocker arms must be installed on the shafts furnished with the kit. Make sure the small oil feed holes in the new shafts face toward the cylinder heads and the valve springs so the bottom side of the rocker arm receives the oil first. Install rocker arms in...

In over my head (rocker geometry)

Check the rocker arm manufacturers specs, Crane used to say 3/4 of a turn below the rocker was optimum. Longer pushrods won't change the pattern on the valve stem since these engines are a rocker shaft type setup, but the patttern on your valve stem tip looks fine, so you have no worries there.

    cam bearing issue

My machinist can get 'em. Also, align boring for larger OD roller bearings in the circle track scene is very popular too.

    cam bearing issue

Align boring the crank and cam bores eliminates these types of issues, but for your intended use, cutting a slot in the old cam core works just fine. Bearing clearances are not determined by measuring and dividing in two! That can be backed up by checking ID and OD specs given by either the...

    400's are they any good?

Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. The 400 has very strong main webbing and the largest bore offered by Chrysler. I have one that will be dropped in my Duster but it's on the back burner right now since I restored my motorcycle, but I'll starting a thread on it in the next month or so...

    Big Blocks and Handling

I'm glad this thread is still going strong. My bike is just about done (for now), so it's getting to be about that time. I had the 400 block sonic checked and it's under wraps right now. Duster is on dollies so I'm running out of excuses. Time to pull the mouse infested 360 and start on...

    When will it explode?

I'm only going by what Dave Caprioti of DC racing told me. I got to trust him since he's been a machinist since the late 70's. More power to your buddy (no pun intended, lol!).

    When will it explode?

My machinst told me 650 is about max for a RB no block fill. He said that the 400 with a half block fill and good machine work should be good for about 750.

    400 to 512 Build

I still have a ways to go. I'd like to see some dyno numbers by maybe May. Even though I'm biulding on a budget, it's still not cheap. :) Thanks pb, I'd like to see the CR at about 11:1 but I really don't see any way to make that happen. I just have to be careful to not over cam the engine...

Thanks DD, we'll see what happens and it sounds as though both our macninists have the same idea. Thanks SS, so far so good. One ear is broke off but I'll be running a motor plate and Dana 60. I mentioned this to Dave and he said this was the way to go anyway. From what we talked about...

Smart man! thinking ahead will keep you on track. Don't ever be afraid to let off... DD, actually I can get away with more compression here in the thin air, but after talking to Dave, I'm going to drop it down to 10.63 for pump premium. I think I can get away with the original plan of 12:75...

    400 to 512 Build

Thank you BD. I'm in way over my head hence all the data from DC engines. I've never built an engine to this caliber and I have a lot to learn. I think I can do this for about 5k, lol. I've been planning this build for litteraly 3 years, ever since I aquired the Duster. So far I have 160 bucks...

Green, I got this block from a kid who damn near killed it in his ramcharger. He said "Why the fk do want this piece of crap? It barely moved my RC". I said "Well, if the block itself 'aint wasted and it truly is a 400, it will suit my purpose". He said "what's that?". I said 650hp in my...

    400 to 512 Build

Thanks Green and yeah buddy, that would kick butt. I'm shooting for a true 650hp here in the rare air. This build could do 725 or better in good air with more fuel and a less agressive timing curve. ASSUMING I even hit 650..... we shall see....

Note the milling here. Even though this is just to clearance the dip stick, it is crude. Does it effect strength of the block? Nope, just looks bad.

Casting flash and sand has to go. That crap can act as a stress riser and/or fall off in get into the pan. Will it make it faster? NO, but it will go fast longer. This is called "De-Burring the Block".

This engine was originally in a Ramcharger. Note the "T" which means truck. As far as I know, the "T" block is no different than a passenger car block. The "7" denotes a 1977 date and the "40" means "400". :) I don't know what the rest of the numbers mean, if someone does know, please post.

As promised, here's some nasty pictures of the 360 that cam with this Duster. The 2 bbl looks rebuilt and new, anyone want it? lol! I bought this for the body thinking that the 318 in it was scrap anyway but I did a bit of checking and it's a 360.

Work didn't leave me alone yesterday, but at least I'm workin'. :) Had a great Turkey Day today, went bowling, bowled a 135 average (not bad, I hadn't bowled in 5 years), went out with the same friends for dinner at the Summit and suprised them by taking care of the check. Overtime...
