The bolt pattern for the bellhousings are different. The bolt pattern for the transmission to the bellhousing are the same for big block and small block manual transmissions. You do need to make sure the bearing retainer diameter matches the bellhousing you go with as there are different sizes.

If the block has the bosses in the front of the block, the bosses can be drilled out and tapped to allow installation of the A-body big block mount. My 69 440 has the bosses which allowed me to upgrade my 69 383-S to a 440+6. Many big blocks have these bosses, but not all. Rod

You can remove the oil pan if you remove one side of the centerlink (idler arm side is easiest) and lower the center link down.
