    Oil filter for 340

I run the K&N HP3001 made in USA by Champion. They are very well built filters and the 1” nut on the back is an added bonus to loosen the filter off on my 340.

    273 Rockers

My factory 273 adjustable rocker arms and shafts that are on my 340 do not have the banana grooves on the shafts. They must be ‘64 assemblies…?

    TRW forged pistons (340)

I'm running the L2316 in .040" in my '69 340. I think the piston to cylinder wall clearance is way tighter with those pistons than any modern forged pistons.

Replacement 68 340 four speed cams

These were the specs Ken at Oregon Cams quoted me in an email. 221/227 @ .050", 276/309 adv, .438"/.456" lift He also said he could grind at 112 or 114 lobe separation angle.

Slant 6 to 340 Engine Swap in 69' Dart

I did this conversion back in 2001 or so. Yes, I used my original Slant 6 date coded alternator on my 340. Been working great for 20 years now. You will have to change out the engine wiring harness only as the components on a 340 are in different locations than a Slant 6.

    Camshaft id help

I have a cam with no numbers on it too. I put it in an block and measured the lift and duration to give me a hint of what cam it might be. If you don’t have a spare engine block you can use vee blocks on a bench with a degree wheel.

Is a .040” Over 340 Stroker Kit Available?

That’s what I’m hoping to get away with, a light honing. Thanks for letting me know your experience.

Thank you for the great advice!

Is a .040” Over 340 Stroker Kit Available?

No, the engine has very low miles at 0.040. I was possibly thinking of freshening it up and adding the stroker kit if the cylinder wall to piston clearance with the new pistons is within spec.

No, I’m at 0.040 right now.

Is a .040” Over 340 Stroker Kit Available?

Hello fellow FABOers Does anyone know if Scat or Eagle offer a stroker kit for a ‘69 340 with a 0.040” overbore? I’ve searched on-line but have only seen kits with 0.030” overbore pistons. Thank you!

    Where are they now?

Love this book! It was my very first Mopar book I ever bought and I still have it. I bought around 1986 and used it solely to rebuild my 318 in my ‘73 Dart when I was 16 years old. I vividly remember a picture of them filling a 273 radiator with a caption saying “If we water it maybe it...

    Well It Leaks AGAIN!

Try the rear main seal out of a Magnum engine. The crank rear main seal journal is slightly smaller on the Magnum versus the LA making the seal slightly larger creating a tighter grip on the crank when used on the LA. It is also made of a softer silicone rubber. It worked on my '69 340.

    X head - cc's

I measured my '69 X heads at 75 cc's. I had them milled down to 68 cc's. (forget how much milled) I was at a performance clinic put on by Herb McCandless and he even said the X heads were more like 75 cc's and he had never seen a set at the advertised volume of 63 cc's.

    Vacuum on 1968 GTS 340 4 spd.

What brand of brake-in oil did you use? If it's Joe Gibbs BR oil, I would call Lake Speed Jr. (Chef Tribologist at Joe Gibbs Driven Oils) directly and ask him what he thinks of the color of the oil. He's an awesome guy to talk to and extremely knowledgeable on everything oil related. Here's a...

    Vacuum on 1968 GTS 340 4 spd.

It might be moly and zinc which is I believe brake in oil is heavy in. I would cut the oil filter with a large pipe cutter or chain cutter and look in the filter pleats. The oil flows from the outside of the filter towards the center.

Possible 340 rear crank main bearing leak

I’ve done it on my ‘69 Dart with a 340 a few times with the engine installed but on a hoist. The Center link has to be moved over to one side. I think I unbolted it at the idler arm side, separated a tie rod end and moved it over to the driver’s side. The oil pan has clearance from the k frame...

    diesel oil alternative?

Very good article by Joe Gibbs Driven Oil chief "tribologist" Lake Speed Jr. All about oil: Lake Speed Jr breaks it down I attended an amazing oil seminar put on by him. The Joe Gibbs Driven Oils have had some serious research and development in 10000 RPM flat tappet camshaft engines.

    340 compression ratio

My factory '69 x heads cc'd at 75. I didn't think it was possible to be so far away from the advertised 63 CCs but Herb McCandless confirmed the fact that x heads were more like 75 CCs on one of his performance seminars. I milled mine down to get 68 CCs for a true 9.8-1 compression ratio.
