Finally a controller for the 42RE on the market...anyone know anything about it?

Is there something different about the 42RE as compared to a 46, 47, or 48? Stand-alone controllers for those others have existed probably more than 10 years. Lots of guys use these for Cummins swaps with 47RE or 48RE transmissions. There’s a ton of history out there on the variety of...

    318/8 Speed Swap

Unfortunately, I don't have any updates as the car for which this swap was slated is no longer around. I have the grand majority of the R&D work done, so I might just list the trans for sale along with my boatload of information and contacts.

Gear Vendors or swap to better tranny?

The A41 from Silver Sport Transmissions (TREMEC 5-Speed and 6-Speed Kits: Silver Sport Transmissions) is another bolt-on option. The "5 spd performance tranny from transmissions.net" sounds really fishy. Gallery: Adding Some Civility With Silver Sport Transmissions' A41 PerfectFit Overdrive...

    318/8 Speed Swap

More on the driveshaft conversion. The Driveshaft Shop adapter has been mentioned on this forum before. Not sure if they have something that will mate to an 8HP70, but it gives you an idea of what the setup would look like. 392 in a 70 Duster

A flexplate would work too, although it isn't quite thick enough to make up the entire space between the crankshaft hub and the torque converter mounting plate. The hub spacer could solve that. Either way could work. I'll have to look at my notes on the bolt pattern. I don't think it matched up...

    318/8 Speed Swap

    1. A junkyard driveshaft is one option. Another option is an adapter flange yoke, Sonnax part number T35-ALFY-08. This gets you to a standard 1350 U-joint. From there, it's as easy as making a slip-joint driveshaft similar to how one would replace a ball & trunion joint (Early Valiant Barracuda...

    Gen III tranny options?

Unfortunately, there aren't any adapters for the BMW version since the Dodge versions are so plentiful here in the states. The Dodge 8HP70 transmissions can be found fairly cheap, but the 8HP90s are pretty high dollar.

    318/8 Speed Swap

None at the moment. Russ at Sound German Automotive continues to make progress on the swap. I know he was tearing in to the factory floor shifters this week to see exactly how they work. A Cummins project has sidelined the 8-speed for me, but it’s still in the corner of the shop, waiting its turn.

    318/8 Speed Swap

Here is a video from a guy that put an 8HP70 in a '67 Ch******. To quote him, "I've tried 2sp, 3sp, 4sp od, and a t56. This 8 spd kills them all."

    318/8 Speed Swap

Actually, that isn't at all correct. The only absolutely necessary inputs are RPM and throttle position (easily added to a carburetor or pulled from an EFI ECU). Drive-by-wire has nothing to do with it. Sound German Automotive already started shipping standalone 8HP70 controllers in February of...

    318/8 Speed Swap

Length isn’t the issue. This isn’t like older overdrives where the extra gears are added on the back. Rather, the 8HP70 is bigger in height and in width at the top. Tunnel modifications are absolutely necessary.

    318/8 Speed Swap

The 70 in 8HP70 means it's rated for a max input torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). That number is a little misleading because of the torque converter, spikes during shifts, etc., but can be used as a guideline. There are plenty of 5.7/6.4 Hemis out there putting way more power than that through a...

    318/8 Speed Swap

I finally got my hands on an 8 speed transmission (8HP70) out of a 2018 Challenger this weekend. This particular one looks to be from an SRT 6.4 Hemi car. Supposedly, it only has 5,000 miles on it. I was able to get it mounted to a spare 318 I had in the shop. There are some custom adapter...

    8 3/4 axle

The passenger side should have an adjuster on it if you have the factory taper bearings. Do yourself a favor and get a factory service manual. There are also thrust blocks in the differential to consider (if they're broken). Many guys go with standard roller bearings (green bearings) and...

I'm guessing the "H" is actually a "K" and it should be preceded by a "P." The 2514483 corresponds to a 1965-1968 truck/van transmission. Nothing too special about it.

The 741 case will be fine. Everybody always freaks out when they see that it was intended for "low weight/low horsepower" stuff. I've beat the crap out of one in a '70 Charger 440/727 and never had any problems in 20+ years. I wouldn't hesitate the slightest to put a 741 case in a 500+ horse...

where to find 8.75 sure grip units used

Agreed. It's just another option. And good luck finding one in a junkyard. Your best bet is to hit a swap meet and shell out $350-550 for a decent used third member.

    Rear end question

There are several good 8.8 swap threads around here. Do a little looking around. I don't recall ever seeing a GM 10-bolt swap in a Mopar. Not sure that the GM 10-bolt is much to speak of as far as strength.

    1. If it is in a 2WD truck, it's most likely the 833 O/D, which has the very low first gear with a 0.73:1 4th gear. 2. The 833 O/D's are not known for their strength. However, Passon Performance could probably hook you up with what is needed to beef it up. 3. I believe all trucks came with...
