i installed the new steering box and the pitman arm (1976 model). torqued the nut (with split washer) to 180 ft lbs. there is about an inch between the top of the pitman arm (on the shaft end) to the bottom of the steering box. my 67 arm has a bit less space than this meaning it looks like someone was able to get the pitman arm to slide higher on the steering box shaft.

is there a tolerance spec for this distance or is it as long as the pitman arm nut is tq to 180 ft pounds?

thanks again everyone

3/4 to an inch sounds about right. If you are really worried you can make sure the slope of both tie rods is the same. The Mopar Chassis Book goes into detail on this. But they've got to be pretty out of whack before road manners suffer.
