Did a search and found a lot of mixed info. So I'll just ask what size tire everyone is running. I read that the biggest you can put on is 195, but then read someone say they run 235.

What car do u have? I just put 215/70 /14 on the front and 225/70/14 on the rear of my 69 barracuda with the 14x5.5 steel wheels.

68 barracuda, but it's less about what will fit the wheel well and more what will fit the 5.5" rim. Do you have pictures?

I am running 205/70s (probably could have gone 215s) on a 66 barracuda

205/75R14 tires on 14x5.5" wheels. Each tire has a designated rim width range specification which you can find when you're shopping for tires. For example, the Hankook Optimo in my size has a rim width range of 5-7". If people are saying not to go wider than 195, they may be thinking of the 4.5" wide wheels.

Most tire manufacturers suggest 195 as the optimum tire for a five and a half inch rim anything else compromises stability

I'm thinking I am going to go with a 215/70/R14 as I believe that will give me close to stock wheel diameter and the largest footprint without interference

15x7 rims with 4.5 backspace allows a 215/70 on the back of a 73 Swinger just barely clearing the springs in a corner.
If I were to get 4 or 3.75 backspace rims I could probably run 235's as I have about an inch between the tires and the unrolled fender lip with 215's and about .25 clearance at the springs.

Running 205/60's in the front also with 4.5 backspace and have zero issue's up there.

An old general rule of thumb was to keep the tread width within 1/2" of the wheel width. So if you strictly follow that rule, the tread could be as wide as 6". Having said that, I might consider 6.5 tread max.

I have a set of 14 x 5.5 SBP Rallyes that will probably end up on my 64 Valiant for awhile. I'm looking at 185/65 x 14 tires mostly because the OD is close to the original 6.50 x 13" tires on 4.5" rims.

High Performance 68 Barracudas came with E70-14 tires on a 5.5 width rim which were about a 25.8 inch outside diameter(OD). That is close to a 215/70R14. That being said, anything with a smaller OD should work. I'm running 225/50ZR15's on our 67 Barracuda with OEM 15 x 7 inch Mirada rims. They are 9 inches wide with 24 inch OD. Playing with Tire Rack's Tire specs on BFGoodrich's Radial T/A it looks like 215 is the largest width recommended for a 5.5 rim. I'd go with that and the profile (I like 60) you like with the highest speed rating you can afford. I like to be below 300 for wear, as I feel they have better traction.
