While these 65' Barracuda 273/235 HP cars were destroying everyone in their
NHRA F/S and F/SA classes in 1965.

They were heavily protested as 'illegal cars'.

Since they originally came through with 7 1/4" rears, with 3.91 Gears,
Mopar offered up the 8 3/4" as a mid-year replacement unit.

Once the 4.89 Gears were installed, it was all over for the competition.

Also, the NHRA permitted the use of the Carter Model #3447 600 CFM
Carburetor as a legal replacement unit.

The #3447 Carburetor was off of the the 1963 426 Stage I Max-Wedge engine.
It had bigger secondaries and larger venturi's than the standard Model #3853 500 CFM
carburetor off of the 273/235 HP engine.

In F/Stock, these Barracuda's were walking away from the competition.

The Golden Commando's (Factory-backed) Barracuda 4-Speed utilized 4.89 Gears
in the 8 3/4" rear-end, along with Super/Stock Springs borrowed for a 65' Race Hemi.

The NHRA technical staff wanted to rule the whole package as 'illegal', and didn't
buy the fact that 8 3/4" Rear-ends were available with these cars.

But, late 1965 production line A-Body cars were available with the 8 3/4" unit,
as described in Plymouth literature as 'for drag racing use'.

In 1965, the NHRA permitted the use of the Carter AFB Model #3447 600 CFM
carburetor as a legal replacement, and allowed the secondary throttle bore on the
cast iron intake manifold to bored out to 1 11/16".

The 'Goldfish' utilized a 'custom-made' fenderwell exhaust header system, featuring
A).......Tri-Y Design
B).......1 5/8" Primary pipes
C).......2" Secondary pipes
D).......16" Primary Collector
E)........6" Final Collector with 3 1/2" diamter opening
