Chevrolet 283/220 HP ....... 223 ......... 237

Ford 289/225 HP ............... 207 ......... 215

I think you have to give it to the 273 on this one...the 289 is basically a 2-barrel motor with flat top pistons and a 4-barrel carb...same cam. SBCs usually run well, however.

Aaron,

Back in 1966 {G/S or G/SA} = {12.50 to 13.99 Wt/Hp}\

The 273/235 HP was the 'Top Dog' in NHRA Class between the '3' Little Small Blocks.

1966 NHRA Horspower Factors

* Barracuda ...... #2940 lbs. = 12.51 Wt/HP
* Dart GT ......... #2945 lbs. = 12.53 Wt/HP
* Nova SS ........ #2867 lbs. = 13.02 Wt/HP
* Mustang GT ... #2874 lbs. = 12.77 Wt/HP

1966 Barracuda Formula S 0-60 in 9.1 seconds, 1/4 mile in 17.2 seconds at 81 mph (source Car and Driver June 1966)
1965 Mustang 2+2 289 cu rated at 210hp 0-60 8 seconds, 1/4 mile in 16.4 seconds at 81.5 mph ( source Car and Driver 1965 yearbook)
1965 Dart GT with 273 Charger 0-60 in 8.2 seconds, 1/4 mile in 16.9 seconds at 87 mph ( source Car and Driver 1965 yearbook)

Sadly nothing on the Chevy II with a 283 cu

I am still going through the years, I have a late 1964 C/D which is a shoot out between the HP 289 cu 271HP vs the 65 Formula S

1966 Chevrolet Nova ~ 283/220 HP {Code L-77}

The book states, only 1386 Produced. Tough to find Magazine Performance Tests.

Though back in March 1966, Baldwin Chevrolet stated that they turned 16.00's @ 88 MPH
with a 'Pure Stock' 283/220 HP, 4-Speed and 10-Bolt Rear w/3.55 Posi-Gears.

Found some information, sadly only Shelby 289 Mustangs

1965 Mustang GT 350 289 cu - 306 hp 0-60 6.5 seconds, 1/4 mile 14.9 seconds at 95 mph (source Car and Driver May 1965)

On a interesting note, the 1966 Mustang GT 350H (almost specs, almost same time) cost $17 a day plus gas to rent and $70 a week plus gas to rent - C/D May 1966)

I know the answer to this one for sure because I was there in my 66 Dart GT. I was never beat by either of those cars.

Johnny D,

In 'Motor Trend' {August 1967}.

The Magazine performed a 'revisit' performance test on a 1967 Dart GT 273/235 HP 4-Speed 'Convertible' with 3.23 Gears 'Sure-Grip'.

The Dart GT had 8000 miles on the Odometer.

They ran the car at Carlsbad Raceway, and took '11-Passes' with the Dart GT.

Best Performance ........ 16.54 @ 86.4 MPH

Now remember, this was with a Dart GT with 8000 Miles on it, and was {+50 lbs.} 'heavier' than the Hardtop.

Dart GT 'Convertible........ Shipping Weight; #2995 lbs. ...... Curb Weight; #3140 lbs.

The only wrench in the works here seems to be the NHRA refactored horsepower numbers...I'm a little surprised at how low the 273 is rated, and how high the 283 is.

In 'Stock Class'

In 2002, the 273/235 HP was dropped from 235 HP to 220 HP.

But in June 2008, they were dropped down to 210 HP in Stock Class 'only.
