1970 Slant 6 oil dipstick chaos

should be easy...i bought new diptick, cut it to clear bottom by 1/2" as suggested but it is hitting crank. cant get a oil reading until the noise stops. can keep cutting it by 1/2" increments or is there a better approach ? thank you for all thoughts!
 
Had a similar problem after I rebuilt my 225. Crank was hitting the dipstick and kicking it up. Thought I messed up with my welded-in baffle. Ended up bending the stick so it was closer to the outside of the pan after insertion. That "fixed" it.
