1972 318 la

-
What kind of money you willing to spend ? A 318 can be turned into quite a screamer . I had a 318 back in the day , it was fun shutting down 350 400 and 396 Chevs and Potomacs with a little 318 .

I would like to spend less than $2,000 on the engine. I have a little parts list going and so far I came up with this:

1972 318 LA (bore .30 over) stock crankshaft

302 Cast Heads ported 1.88/1.60 3 angle valve job and bowl blend

KB 167 Pistons/Moly Rings

Scat I-Beam rods

Comp Cam XE275HL

Weiland Action Plus 8007 Intake

Edelbrock 650 Thunder Carb

First find out if the block needs to be bored, then go from there. I'd still go with the RHS heads over the 302/308 heads.

You can spend as much as you like, but to get to 350 horsepower, a stock set of 308's would be sufficient, especially if they were just mildly ported. 1.88 / 1.60 valves will run 350-375 horsepower anytime. If you bore your motor with KB, no need to cut the heads. I know a guy that ran 11.70's in a full size pickup truck with stock 360 heads on a 360. Now his cam, stall, and gears were wild, but the point is that he used 360 1.88 valve heads.

I'll have to keep an eye out for some 308's. I cannot find them anywhere online.

Thanks! I'll check it out. The reason I was thinking the 302 Cast is because I can buy them fully rebuilt and assembled for $285 per head.

Than that would be the way to go. Just know you'll have to disassembled to port and clean them back up after porting.

Price wise I thought it made the most sense. There is a place in Kentucky that rebuild heads and fully tests them. They even come with a warranty. I just have to figure out how much it will cost to do a 3 angle valve job, a mild port, and bowl blend.

If I did the 302 cast heads and ran KB 167's would I need to bore the block at all?

Nope because the 302 heads are designed for 318s. Just first findout if it needs bored go from there. If you get some real good compression you might wanna look at the 308 heads for better flow.

Why are you going to use the Action Plus 8007 intake with the Eddy carb? It is a square bore intake and you are using a square bore carb. I would go with the Stealth 8022 intake as it is rated for idle to 6800 RPM vs idle to 6000 RPM with the action plus. Then run the thick split intake to keep the split plenum all the way to the carb for best performance.

Here's the comparable gasket in Edelbrock:

I would also recommend using Rhoades lifters also.

So it would be wise to bore the block .30 or .40 to get closer to the 4.00 bore.

I think that for a 318 it would probably be fine to use the stock size 1.88 intake valve.
But you will still need good flowing heads and a compression ratio of about 9.2 :1 for iron heads. Much more than that might be a problem with pump gas.

Good flowing heads and a 9.2 : 1 compression ratio will help, too.
All these other guys have great ideas, too.

You do not have to overbore the block for bigger valves. I put over 350,000 miles on a 318 with a stock bore and 2.02" intakes. No problem.

We've done it too, with no issues..... AMEN

So here is the car:

How much should I offer for it?

http://www.wrightwaysalvage.com/store/p92/1972_Dart.html
300.00 , What do the floors inner fenders and trunk floors look like ? Does it start , does the trans work ? I f everything works and it's not rusted to hell 600.00 ??? Probavly needs all new brake lines drums discs master , wiring might be in need of overhaul as well , mice love the wires . How long it been sitting ?
Might be better off finding a Dart with a great body frame and no engine trans .

and for carb intake , the stealth looks good , that and a holley 650 , or if you can find a good thermoquad , my 318 ran great with a thermoquad .

I haven't looked at the car yet, but he said it turns over. I haven't offered anything yet, but I asked how much he wanted and he said 2,000 OBO lol. I can tell just be looking at it it isn't worth more than $650

Ummm.... that really looks like it's been there awhile. If it is not in the dry climate, your floors, frame may be a little iffy. That needs a lot of work to safely put on the road. Brakes and steering are very important to safety and should not be overlooked. I think for 2k you could find one that is already a daily driver...

Yep I totally agree. I plan on offering $300 and see where that gets me. The worst he can say is no lol.

About 10 years ago Hot Rod mag. built a 400 hp 318 for a reasonable price, with Steve MOPAR Magnate in charge. That info should be available.
