318 Oil Capacity

1968 stock 318 in a Barracuda. FSM says ALL Plymouth motors except 426 have an oil capacity of 4 quarts. Dipstick has 4 qts just touching the bottom of the full marked section. Of course this includes whatever is in the filter. I always thought that these v8's took 5 qts. With 5 qts. dipstick is right in the middle of the full area. After driving a few hundred miles after filling with 5 qts the car always drops to the 4 qt level and holds. So what is the real/official oil capacity for these motors?

4 qts. in the pan and one in the filter unless it's a truck pan.

There is usually a note that states to add a quart with a filter change.

5 with the short filter 5 1/2 with the long (PH-8A) style filter.
