So my son has a dilemma. He has been wanting to upgrade his 318/2bbl valiant ro a factory 4bbl set up. Which of course means swapping to a 4bbl air cleaner. He will keep all the factory 2bbl intake carb and air cleaner on the shelf. We bought him a factory 340 4bbl air cleaner with the vacuum operated air flap. It has the original 340 4bbl call out on the lid. He is thinking he wants to sand blast or wire wheel it to bare metal, repaint and put on a 318 decal or pie pan. But then he wondered should he just leave it as is with the 340 decal, strip it and put a 318 decal or put a pie pan call out with either the 318 or 340 on it? We haven't received it yet from the ebay seller. Or I would post the pics of it. Any opinions on how to go with it? He is leaning towards stripping it, repaint and 318 decal or pie pan. More so towards the decal.

I was in the same boat as your son when I did my 4bbl upgrade a couple of years ago. I decided to sandblast the 340 air cleaner and go for no pie pan or 318 decal.

If you need any tips, check out the write-up I did:
LD4B installation on a 75 318

The air cleaner I bought for him is in the same orange as yours. And his engine is blue like yours. I asked him if he was going to repaint it orange. And his thought was to go black like his two bbl set up is, as yours was. But I liked the contrast of the orange and blue. He also mentioned leaving it blank with no decal or pie.

I like to contrast between the orange and the blue. And since the 4bbl engines came with orange air cleaners, it sealed the deal for me yet I’m not misrepresenting it since there is no 340 call out.

I’ve since upgraded the exhaust manifolds (last year) so the engine bay looks even better with painted manifolds instead of the rusty 318 manifolds. Next step is improving the appearance of the master cylinder.

Your son will notice a difference with the 4bbl!

I showed him your write up and he did like the look of it overall. Lol. Now he has to really contemplate his plan of action for it. Thanks for the link to yours.

teach him lying and misleading is wrong
if the engine is a 318, dont let him present it as anything else

No worries on that. He said he wants to put the 318 decal on it or nothing at all.

Nothing wrong with going 'naked' - in this case it is not likely to offend anyone.....

Lol. One would like to think no one would be offended by the naked air cleaner lid. But nowadays it's almost impossible not to offend someone over anything. I'm sure someone would be mad about the fact that it uses fossil fuels, has to be driven by a human, and doesn't require a catalytic converter. The naked air cleaner would just be the final straw. Haha.

Maybe you should get a decal that says “Naked”...:D
