Quick question, which is probably stupid, but here goes. It is possible to change the gasket on a MOPAR/340 ('72) oil filler cap? Mine is original (see pics), and it's leaking. I see that AMD is making reproduction caps, but since my car is a survivor, I'd like to avoid replacing the original cap if possible. Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Honestly a “survivor” car it is fully acceptable to replace tune up parts and filters and anything else for that matter but keep the original stuff. Replacement parts to make it safe is way better than not replacing, having a leak- then a fire.
Just hold on to what ever you remove.

So many people get hung up on “original.” Who the heck wants a 60-70 year old filter on the engine? That can cause more damage than the value Of a swapped part to keep it fresh and running properly.

Agreed. Have lots of parts (hoses, plug wires, etc. in boxes) my wife loves. them. Thanks for the response.

I've cut the palm out of a dirty leather work glove & stretched it over to fit - it helps. Rocker squirts oil right onto inside of cap & it needs a little wipe once in awhile.

After 50 years of taking it off and on , The valve cover and the cap wear. Some times you need to double the the gasket up.

Myself, I wouldn't worry about the oil filler cap not being original. You can buy a new cap take off the rubber seal and put it on the original cap. Some things can't stay original, water pump, fuel pump etc. I wouldn't worry about it.

Gents: Thanks for all the information and advice, I really appreciate it. That's what makes this forum so damn good. Thanks again! Doug
