I have a 72 340, just changed oil after break in. stock pan, stock motor. I put 5 quarts in and it shows way over full. Could the dipstick be the wrong dipstick? I purchased the block with pan and no internals. It showed over full with the break in oil, but not as much as this. I would assume the 340 takes 5 quarts as do most v8 engines.

Any ideas wanted.
Thanks!!

sure, it all can be wrong, but if you have a stock pan, then 5 quarts is right, i would mark the dipstick and not look back
(that is going on the assumption you pulled the filter as well, and there isnt an extra qaurt hiding in there)

Exactly what I was thinking. Always pull the filter. Thanks

i have always checked or calibrated the dipstick.
With the block fresh and oil pan empty add 4 quarts, let it sit for a while and then confirm or correct your dipstick full mark.

4.5 with short filter and 5 with tall filter.
start and warm eng, then shut off, wait a couple minutes. Pull dipstick and mark the new full mark.
