Just thought I'd let you folks running either a 383 or 400 know that there is a great article in the Spring 2008 Hot Rod Engine magazine, I know it's hard to believe. It takes a mild 383 and wild 383 and runs over 12 different single plane, dual plane, dual 4 and tunnel ram manifolds on them complete with test HP and Torque outputs. I've been thinking about changing my single plane over to a Performer RPM and the articles would back that up.

Terry, give er to your liver quivers.:burnout:

Hot Rod Mag did two of those comparisons late this year. One with a mild cam and another with a hotter cam. Great articles! Who would have thought that the high rise dual quad beat all and the low rise dual quad intake got beat by some single quad manifolds?

I guess what it really comes down to is balance, starting at the carb all the way through to the headers. I was mostly impressed by how well the Performer RPM did against the single planes at the top RPM range, it was really close.

I have not seen that article .... how did the Holley SD and the Eddie TM-6 do?

Terry,

Yeah, the performer RPM just really did well almost everywhere with just a few single planes beating it way up top and not by much.

Doc,

Let me take a look tonight and see what I can find.

Lets see Doc, on the mild? (.573/.597 lift) cammed 383 with stock 906 heads, 10.3 to 1 comp. and 850 holley, the Holley SD was 449ft/lb @ 4000 rpm and 455hp @ 5900, Mopar M1 was 449ft/lb @ 3900 and 456hp @ 5900, the TM6 was 449ft/lb @ 4000 and 452hp @ 5900, for comparison the Edel Performer RPM was 457ft/lb @ 4000, 451hp @ 5900. They new that for the test the head would be the limiter.

Now same engine and carb but with a .646/.648 lift cam, Edelbrock Performer CNC heads, the Holley SD was 469ft/lb @ 5100, 509hp @ 6400, then TM6 was 464ft/lb @ 5100, 510hp @ 6300, the M1 was 468ft/lb @ 5100, 512hp @ 6400, the Performer RPM was 470ft/lb @5000, 505hp @ 6500.

Now I got eye strain, hope this helps Doc.

nice post thanks for the info terry, iam running the holley sd and was looking to change to the m1 for my 383

Thanks Randy

Ya I'm running a single plane on my 383 (I'm to embarassed to say which but it was cheap when I built the engine) that didn't even make the second round and I'm switching over to an Eddy RPM in the spring. Also if you're going to stick with an M1 I'd recommend a
1" 4 hole spacer to help the bottom end but you may already now that.

THX d s ... BTW -- what did it mention concerning the best rpm? ...I need the BESTest rpm-ing single 4 intake for a 383 ... for my old V-drive shovel-nose hydroplane(boat) !

Since its a boat, why not go with the wieand tunnel ram? Tons 'O' torque and the best hp by a fairly wide margin.

I'd post an answer tonight in regards to your question but Terry will beat me to it. lol!

A T R would look the best(since the motor is sitting WAY out in the open) ... but it does not have the best "manners". I want to be able to cruise with this all weekend on a single tank of fuel.

I do have a TR ...and it is 4sale .... and I was going to use it on this boat .. but I found a VERY tall scoop to make the center of the motor sit up higher than the headers !
