4 speed Hump question

I am converting from an auto to a 4 speed and my next question for the masses is this.

Should I mount the tranny up before I weld in the hump to make sure I get the hole nice and square?

I noticed the shift lever wasn't centered in the hole, and there was no way I could move that tunnel over so it would be center, so what I did was, I welded it where it wanted to sit, and I made a pattern of that oval hole, plugged it and moved it over to the right 1 inch...

I installed it on mine just to better center the shifter in the hump hole, then welded it.
