400 engine rebuild

Hello people..
looking for advice and ideas on rebuilding a 400 engine out of a 73 chrysler..
its a stock 2 barrel, i have it transplanted into a 73 fury III. i would like more horsepower and maintain drivability , don't want to turn it into a gas hog..
i was thinking a 4 barrel and a cam of sorts, already have dual exhaust on stock manifolds.
what kind of horsepower gain can i expect ..
Don't want to spend a fortune.
All opinions are appreciated, thanks ahead of time.
 
do you have a budget in mind? does it involve machine work? bore, hone, and balancing at the very least? one of the problems with the b engines is piston selction. there is a guy on moparts that is working on making several options of forged lightweight pistons to fill this void.
 
was thinking of keeping running block stock, tight budget.. but am open to options
 
Don't the 400s have really low compression? If your going to want to get any decent power from it, look at upping the compression with smaller chamber heads if you want to keep the stock short block, or get new pistons, or both.
 
ok, then I wouldn't call it a "400 rebuild".
ive done it. hone, rings, a bunch of parts I already had. at the end of the day I put about 1,000 into it. 10,000 miles later its still going strong. I think mine is a slug, but there are some posts on here where guys have made some decent power on a stock 400 shortblock.
 
Its low compression if you rebuild it to spec. With the proper pistons, cam, intake, it will scream just like a 383 or 440 magnum.
