A guy I know has a few mopar big blocks in his shop and sez they are 440s. Is there ways of verifying it is a 440 and not a 383 or vice versa?? Thanks Whoolph

On the top front right hand side of the block as you face it, is a flat spot, where the cubic inch should be stamped. If you see the hole for the distributor look about 4 inchs to the right.
Good luck

A 440 is a RB, or raised block motor. The flat spot to the drivers side of the distributor hole and above the coolant passages is the "raised block." Really, it's the deck height that's raised, but this helps remember how to identify it. This is the pad that would have a letter for the year, "440" for the size, "HP" if applicable, and other info. A later 383 would be a B motor, and have a shorter deck height. There was an earlier 383 that was an RB motor. A B motor won't have that raised pad, and the machining for the head surface would carry on to the area above and outboard of the coolant passages. This where the previously mentioned info would be stamped. Casting numbers could also be used for identification. They are here: Engine Casting Numbers
