440 intake gaskets

Why & when are the "paper" gaskets required for the 440 intake manifold? I've never seen them on any motor that I've disassembled,just the sheetmetal bathtub gasket w/o paper gaskets.

total guess here but maybe when the block is decked or heads milled so intake works without milling

You use them with the valley pan for the expansion and contraction between a aluminum intake and cast heads or all aluminum intake and heads.
