what do these numbers mean??? 2881489 AAPW... 275... i know the 489 case but the rest?

the 2881489 means it is a 489 case and the 2881 is just one of the 489 cases, there are different numbers for different cases. I think they primarily tell you what "era" it is from

cool thx! i found a whole diff and housing on cg!

just looked in my info

It means you have a 69-74 casting

I thought that the 275 might of been a gear ratio but it looks like they only had the 2.76 as a gear ratio but it doesnt matter since 69-74 cases had the gear ratio on tags NOT cast into the case

hope this helps

k cuz i already have a 8.75 for an a body with a 741 chunk for my 68 but i would rather have the 742 or 489. then with 3.91's and tall tires my slant will be romping!

Im not positive but I dont think that you can (something to do with the smaller/larger pinion?) someone here will know that for sure....pretty sure the sure grip units are interchangable

741s are stronger than you think. stick the suregrip in the 741 if you like your gear set

I used to build gears. The "stronger/weaker" arguement is like discussing which is better: A HEMI or a 383. Everybody knows that the HEMI is stronger, but still, you would NEVER throw a 383 block in the scrap heap!
You are talking strong, stronger, STRONGEST, not WEAK ,strong, stronger!
ANY 8 3/4 rear is better than the next best thing. Unless you are running huge slicks, you are not likely to break a 741 rear.
