I picked up a bare case a while back and I now it’s time to put it together. I was going to purchase an install kit from Dr diff and I came across a question that I am not sure I know the answer to. Is there a washer behind the pinion yoke and is that included in the kits or can I buy it separately? I didn’t see anything on the dr. Diff website. It’s a basic set up with the crush sleeve and a stock yoke if that helps.

the washer you speak of is not included in any rebuild kit ,, it was a thrust washer installed at the factory between the yoke and the front bearing for what reason i do not know exactly . i have never reused that part on any of my 8-3/4 builds . with the 489 case start you pinion depth locating shim selection with a 0.030 shim and add or remove 0.003 shim thickness depending on the gear pattern you get. you do not have to install the crush collar until you determine the proper pinion depth then go to final assembly with the crush collar . hope you have a bar long enough to set the preload as you can pull up 400-500 + lbs/ft of torque to crush the collar properly.

I have seen a washer between the pinion bearing and the pinion seal on Dana 60’s, but never on a 8 3/4. The last 489 with a crush collar I did, I had the pinion nut torqued to over 450 ft. lbs and it pulled the threads out of the pinion nut. It got a solid spacer and shims and a new pinion nut.

Belville washer under pinion yoke nut?
Even though I did 2 diff's recently, I don't remember

Are you talking about washers or shims? If you look at Dr Diff's minimum install kit it includes everything you need, including pinion nuts and washers as well as the shims which you need to set the front bearing pre load. It also has shims that go under the back bearing to set the pinion depth so the gears mesh correctly. It's a matter of trial and error so you may have to take it apart a couple times to add or subtract shims to get it right.

The washer between the pinion seal and bearings was a large diameter thin washer. I thought that it would act like a baffle to help keep the seal from leaking. All of the race ones I have worked on did not have it
