Will the overdrive unit from a 1996 518RE / fit and work if bolted to a 1990 A500RH ?

probably bolt up but re trans are engaged differently. if yours is bad, there are several places on internet that sell rebuilt o/d units only.

There is two metal tubes that extend to the output shaft section in the "RH" models that transfer fluids to the governor devise, there isn't a governor on the tail shaft of the "RE" model!

RE is electronically controlled. You'd have to get the 518 RH or 618 (behind diesels.)
