I got a 1958 dodge d100 with a 315 poly and a 4 speed transmission...
Question I have...is there an automatic transmission that will bolt up to the current bell housing???

First thing. Where do you come up with the 315 Poly? A D100 from 58 to 65 should of had a 313 with a 3 7/8 bore. A Chrysler from 57 to 65 could be a 313 also. A 315 really is a 1 year only offering for a 56 Chrysler. Anyway, lets continue. What is the "register" diameter of the butt end of that crank, where a torque converter snout would engage? This may be your only concern.

OK, not a truck expert, but Dodge cars offered a 315 poly in 56 and 57 (plus a 315 hemi in 56 and a 325 hemi in 57). 58 Dodge cars' base V8 was a 325 poly. These poly motors were all poly headed versions of the Dodge hemi. 58 was the last year for the Dodge hemi-derived poly motors.

59 Dodge cars' base V8 (in the Coronet) was a one-year-only 326 poly that was a Plymouth 318 poly bored .040 over. Completely different engine than the earlier Dodge poly motors.

I never heard of a Chrysler 315 poly. 56 Chrysler poly motors were 331s, while 57 (and, I think, 58) Chrysler poly motors were 354. These were Chrysler hemi motors with poly heads.

57 was the last year for the Dodge and DeSoto hemis, 58 was the last year for the Chrysler hemi (not counting the 64-71 426 hemis, of course). But Dodge cars still used the Dodge poly motor in 58.

So, I would think a 58 Dodge truck motor would/could be a 315 Dodge poly motor. ????

One other area that could be different, while selecting a trans, is the driver side bolt hole location. about 66 67 things changed.

northern 313 is a bastard for parts , tried to get some info on another project with one of those . couldn't get much info , but the bolt pattern on the rear of the block for a bell housing mount should be the same as all early blocks 241 259 270 291 301 315 318 325 330 331 345 392 . but i'll not sure of the alinement dowels . all of the american blocks use the same pattern for them . so there are adapters out there for gm or chrysler trannies

The transmission that will bolt up is most likely the 2 speed Powerflite. It is a heavy, cast iron case unit. The cast iron 3 speed TF will also likely bolt up.

The crank flange should have drilled holes, not threaded like later cranks. The TC that fits these has 6 or 8 studs that stick out the back of the TC, & the TC bolts to the crank using 3/8" UNF nuts. There is a short, removable coupling that connects the TC to the trans pump.

I would imagine these parts will be hard to get. Better option would be to see if a 1962 or later 318 crank fits, & then you can use the 727 or 904 TF trans.
