6.1L Hemi short block price tag??

So, today I jump on craigslist and just listed today is a 6.1L Hemi shortblock out of a 2008 SRT8 Jeep w/44,000mi on it. Dude has it listed for $800 !!!
Is it worth this price tag?? My wife said I could get it if I wanted...just thought I stop here first and see what you guys and gals thought.

Okay, so yesterday, I offered him $600 for it...he said he could only do $700 so I didn't reply back. Well, today, he texts me and says he'll let it go for the $600 this weekend only!! Is it worth it??

There's a guy local guy on Craigslist over my way that's asking $1800 for a shortblock and $5k for a complete motor. Might see if the guy has any history on the engine. Whether it was pulled from a wrecked vehicle and parted out or if it's got mechanical problems. If everything checks out I'd think it would be a good start.

Well the story on the hemi is this: The motor was making a bad "ticking noise" and they decided to pull it and replace the short block. Come to find out all it was was the timing chain tensioner was loose or something. He has two of the pistons out so a buyer can inspect the cylinder walls, bearings, etc. He says that's all that was wrong with it.
I'd like to go pick it up right now except for the blizzard-like weather we're having here in good ol' Colorado....i'm 60 mi south of him...would not be a fun drive....especially that Denver has around 20" of snow in some places!! Actually it's been snowing here since last night and still is coming down pretty good.
Motor comes with cam, timing set, and lifters as well.

It's all about pricing out the whole project.

Used 6.1 Hemis go from 4K to 5K, with accessories and the engine harness. Sure you'll see them on Ebay asking 6K to 7K but you'll also notice they don't sell. Used 5.7 pre 09 go for 1500 to 3K depending if it is a car or truck motors. The car motors go for more. Again this generally includes the accessories.

So the question becomes, can you piece together the rest of the motor for less than $3400.00?

Depending upon what your plans are it might be a great deal. If you planned to build a race car with few to no accessories and build a kick *** stroker in which you were going to replace all the internals. Than your basically buying a block for $600.00 which is probably a good deal, especially if the crank is good, it is worth between $150.00 and $250.00 as a lot of 5.7 guys would like to replace their cast crank.

The top end of a 6.1 can get expensive the cast aluminium manifold is worth 600.00. Again if you were going to go carb or flanged manifold instead, no big deal. You can buy a manifold from Indy for $400.00

To cut a long post short, the question is what are your plans. Have a plan, pencil it out and see if it makes sense.

Hi Joe, yeah, I do have the project in mind. I'm planning on building a 426 stroker and adding a kenne bell supercharger...this of course, when funds are available. I'm not too sure about how the whole fuel injection/computer thing will work as i'm not yet familiar with any aftermarket setups. Or, should I find a factory computer/harness and try to use that and have it modified?? I wouldn't be running any A/C or power steering either. Going to go into my 66 Valiant.
Just thought that maybe I ran into a good deal for a short block...some of my friends at work don't think it's worth it though...just because of exactly what you're saying...how much is the rest of the parts going to be. So, now I'm not too sure if I should pick it up or not.:banghead:

I think I would pass. lxforums.com has some good deals in their classifieds occasionally.
Good deals are out there if you look around and are patient. I was lucky enough to snag a brand new zero miles 6.1 complete engine with harness for $4300 in Salt Lake City. It was advertised on their regional Utah 'classified' website. I don't remember the name but it was like 3 letters long. In New England, they have unclehenrys.com that is a similar regional classifieds website. I'm sure there are many more out there in the USA.

Whether it's worth it, or not needs to be your personal choice. The best you can hope for here would be a consensus of opinions.
IS it worth $800 to you for a short block ( the engine block and reciprocating mass)?

To figure that out, you'd need to know how much it would further cost for two complete heads, pushrods, intake manifold, fuel injectors, throttle body, computer and various electronic parts, exhaust headers or manifolds, any required machine work, a compatible trans., motor mounts, etc, etc, etc...

I recommend that you spend a few hours figuring out how much it will cost to make it an operating engine, VS. buying a "take out engine" from a wrecked vehicle that comes with all the stuff this block does not, and compare that price to this one.

Then you'll know if it's "worth it" to YOU.
