hey guys, just bought a 318 with an auto trans from a 71 charger, going to be putting it in my 66 valiant, gunna make it my daily driver, so i'm only gunna run a carter 2 barrel on it, wondering what suggestions you guys might have? i'm not gunna be racing it or anything, but i want it to go, and go quick

i want lower rpm power, i dont see myself getting into the 4500-5500 on the freeway

Welcome to FABO.You can get lots of info for doing the swap by going to the forums(top of main page).Go to Early-A body discussions and read a bunch of threads on the 6 cyl to V8 swap. You can also use the Search option. This subject has been discussed many times.Read on!:D

Only three things to consider. 1 engine mounts, check out Trans- dapt,Summit Racing,Schumaker .(sometimes the mechanical parts for sale forums ,turn up some good deals. 2,make sure, you have a 904 trans,on the back of that 318. 727 trans, kind of tight against the floorpan/trans tunnel.3,driveshaft length. Probably will need to find one,cut one down. Make sure the brakes & suspension ,are in useable shape. Sounds like fun!

If you don't keep your foot in it all the time, you can actually get better mileage with a small four barrel carburetor. What I would do would be to use the Summit 6900 cam and lifter kit and build the rest stock with something like an Edelbrock 500 carburetor on it.

If you can find some 302 heads, it will wake up compression with .028 gaskets and a light mill to give it a good seal.

Get a cam with very little valve overlap, high lift and low duration on a lobe that has a modern cut that gets the valve open and closed quickly. If you do this and do not run a roller cam, run Brad Penn's Penn Grade 1 oil.

A thermoquad or a Street Demon has smaller primaries than a carter BBD's 2 barrels.

The TQ carb is hard to get parts for, but they are cheap enough that you can find stuff on ebay and tinker with them.

The summit carb is good too. I went with the Street Demon, for parts, design and the idle control. Smoothest idling engine I've ever worked on.
