Last year I pulled my steering column and rebuilt the coupler, because I could feel a vibration in the column at ~65 mph or so. The coupler housing itself was fine. I bought the shoes from Laysons and the seal and cover from Detroit Muscle - everything fit perfectly. I packed it with grease, and the problem disappeared.
...for a while. It's back, and I'm frustrated. I can feel looseness in the coupler when I grab the steering shaft and move it. I'm not looking forward to pulling the column again, but I guess I have to.
I'm not all that concerned with originality, so I'd like to know if there is a maintenance-free component I can use to replace this thing. I recall reading that U-joints are not recommended, but I'd like to know why.
adTHANKSvance,
Dan
