I have two problems:
1. The turn signal switch doesn't self cancel
2. The housing that the turn signal stalk is in can rotate around the steering column

I took off the steering wheel and found the turn signal switch was broken. I've read about removing the wires at the bottom of the steering column, but I don't think I need to do that. My local auto parts has just the upper white plastic piece, but I can't get the old one off.

Red arrow - broken pieces
Yellow arrow - metal post
Green arrows - screws

Is there a trick to removing the upper white plastic piece from the metal post (see the yellow arrow)?

Once I get it off, I'd like to carefully lift out the rest of the switch, let it dangle, and see if tightening up the screws (green arrows) will stop the housing from moving around the steering column.

I have the 1965 Plymouth Service Manual, but the steering info is really limited.

I've had some great advice from this site. Thanks to all.

These switches wear out in more ways than one. You can replace the cam, but (1) that doesn't do anything for the high resistance/intermittent contact that develops in the contact shuttles underneath due to physical wear and tear over the years, and (2) the replacement cams tend to break early and often. New complete switch see here (that's me; you can PM me on here or on there, either way)

Thanks Dan. I guess I was trying to do it cheaply, but you make a good point about wear and longevity. I'll see if I can get the entire old switch out, then PM you for the purchase.

Do you have any advice on how to stop the housing from moving around the steering column when I use the turn signal stalk?

^^^^^ By far the best thing you can do is get the switch from or thru Dan.
The quality is the best on the market. You won't go wrong.
The 2 nuts in the photo hold the stalks together. Careful when removing the nuts as the bolt is a taper fit and will/may fall out. They may have been indexed wrong thus the rotating housing.

Just replacing the cam worked for me, I guess it wouldn't hurt to try it

When the steering column is assembled and installed correctly, with all nuts/bolts/screws correctly tightened, parts that shouldn't move won't move.

I second Dan. Spend the extra and you're done with it. I bought his switch, it is top quality.
