Im putting a 440 with motor plates into a 65 Dart. It has a 7 qt.Moroso pan and I am concerned about the pan to centerlink clearence.I know I will have to cut the firewall and tunnel to fit the 727 but that is no big deal.Just concerned about the steering.Has anyone done such a foolish thing and what problems did you have?

The trans tunnel most likely will only need the center seem flattened to clear the 727. That's all I needed to do. Not sure on the pan, I used a race pan with a tube through it for the drag link. Headers will need to be fenderwell. You can cut out the firewall area behind the front wheels and build a box for the header tubes to gain turning radius, but you have to bild custom headers If you don't and try and run four tube headers, tire turning radius is severely reduced. You will also need to move the passenger side upper shock mount, to make room for the center two header tubes. Your best bet is to dump the 440 idea and go 400 with standard exhaust port type heads to gain all the room you can. This is a tough swap, using a 440. If I ever do another early A/ bigblock street car, I will set it up with a pinto or mustang II front end to get room for everything. It will take some fabrication skills, but that is the best way to go.

Phil , Greg is right , the pinto set up is the way to go but will require fabrication skills and bracing to a roll cage . I am building a 66 Cuda funny car but the way I did it will work . Just look up Old Mans 66 cuda funnycar build on the A body site . I built a 65 Cuda years ago and sunk a pinto rack into the stock crossmember and used a set of coilover shocks . When the spindles were switched from side to side the caster was thrown off but by moving the k member forward brought the caster back to useable spec's . I used a 440 in the car with no clearance issues from oil pans or headers . Used a set of 1 7/8 headman headers with no clearance issues . Again just fab skills .
