Has anyone removed the heater / round knob radio bezel successfully without damaging it. I recall removing it 40 years ago and braking off some plastic tabs on the back. (I was young and impatient at the time. Luckily my dad had much more patients with me!)

My dash has 3 round holes (>1/4") that don't look factory where some form of post lines up on the back of the bezel.

Also where the bezel mates to the heater control bracket there are 2 alignment posts and 2 hollowed out remnants of posts as if the bezel had 2 screws that would be screwed in from under the dash.

Am I correct that there should be 2 small screws through the heater bracket?
Am I correct that the 3 large holes in the metal dash should not be round and should be painted?

Any photos of the metal dash and the back side of a bezel that is intact would be helpful
