I was able to source a set of the stock wheel covers for my 67 barracuda which I know for sure it came with originally.
I was thinking of touching up the paint on them to make them look a bit better.
The black paint areas are obvious, being the “slits” around the perimeter and around the logo in the center ring.
My question is about the indented area where each “slit” is around the perimeter. It appears that this area may have been painted a dark grey colour; is that correct, or was the black areas the only areas painted on these wheel covers?

Yes but a medium to lighter gray, I can get a photo of a nice correct original at dinner time.

Your gray paint looks pretty good, they need detailed though.

First one in shade, second one in sun. This is an early take off and stored inside.

The lighter gray is the true color of the gray. The sun, angles and shadows make it look different colors.

Different wheel cover, most likely the same color used, I used a dark argent. Will be interesting to see what others have to say.

Hmm, the black looks flat on 50-year-old parts, but it could have been semigloss. A lot of parts were. Semigloss will look "blacker".

I have always thought that they used some kind of texture in the argent paint — it seems to have a little bit of "tooth". I have seen industrial paint swatch cards with 8 or 10 levels of texture on them, so it would probably be impossible to pin down the exact one. The argent paint is 95% gone from my original wheel covers, so there is not much to go by..

The cap in the first post is a standard full wheel cover on many cars, it is not fancy. No textured paint on them.

The cap in post #3 is an extra cost optional cap. It has textured paint.

Don't try to spruce them up with fancy textured paints, they will look silly.

I don't think you understand what I meant by "textured". I don't mean like the wrinkle finish valve cover paint. I meant they used various flattening agents and fine texturing agents, so the silver argent paint had a matte finish but still had a little metallic sparkle — it wasn't just dull gray.

It could only be an improvement...

Since we're talking hubcaps, colors, and textures, I sold a set of the dealer installed mag wheel covers a while back.
I had them for years, a really nice original set.
They did have some pitting, but the black looked flat, both the light and dark grey was textured, whether that was the paint or the actual surface I do not recall.
