I am looking at 2 different 68 GTS 383 4 speed cars for sale. 1 has an inland shifter and the other a hurst. Anyone know why that would be ?

early build cars had inland shifters and somewhere between calender year and model mid-year they changed to Hurst......a lot of restorers of early build cars often put in a hurst bcoz the hurst is a better shifter. the inland has rubber insulators under the nuts that attach the handle to the mechanism and that makes for too much flex in a competitive application.
even if it has a Hurst a 68 should have the chicken scratch hurst shifter meaning the word "HURST" looks like it was put into the shifter with an engraving tool .......the late 68/ 9 Hurst shifters have the word "HURST" in wide block lettering that looks real nice.
there is no clear cut dates when they made these changes, bcoz it varied from plant to plant, but closely inspecting an original fender tagged car should shed some light on which one it had.

Exactly correct. You will find the same thing in 68 Barracudas.
