Hey guys:
I've been working on my '73 getting it ready to go back on the road.
I noticed that when I rotated one of the wheels, it seemed like it rotated further than it should before moving the driveshaft, along with more noise than it ought to make.
I pulled the cover, and the first bad sign was that there was 1/2" of thick goo in the bottom of the housing. I've worked on several rears and haven't EVER seen that before.
I scooped that mess out and examined the internals.
When I rotate the RR wheel, there is apparent slop between the axle splines and the spider gear that rides on it, to the point that the spider gear can be moved a few degrees each way by finger pressure.
Doesn't seem normal. Is it? It's not going to hurt my feelings if this rear is shot. I thought all V8 cars had 8.25's by '73 but I guess not.
Thanks for input that specifically addresses spider gear issues in 7-1/4 rear ends.
