Does anyone know the stall rating of a stock 1971 318 Dart Swinger torque converter with a 904 automatic transmission and 7 1/4 rear end? Some one said that it is good practice to choose an after market converter that "locks in" at 500 RPMs higher than the initial rating of the cam. My Mopar purple camshaft rating is 1500 to 5800. I want to know if there is much to gain from changing converters. Thanks folks!

If memory serves me correct, I think the factory stall is 1400-1600. Now, with that said, I would not even consider a different stall until you change the rear. The 7 1/4 isn't going to hold up long with harder launches, AND you really need to know what gears you are going to run plus a multitude of other specs from your combo to properly select a high stall converter.

I would get all other things in order first and then have a converter built for your application.

And yes a good converter will make a huge difference.
