Its usually easier to switch to a '72 up filler neck than find a '71 cap. If being original isn't a problem, try to get a filler neck off one of the later parts cars that get listed here all the time. Then you can get caps at your local parts store for dirt cheap.

Ya, whats the deal with the gas cap. I heard its a 1 year only cap. Anyone know the reasoning behind that?
Reasoning? Assuming there was any, I have no idea. '71 was when they started changing stuff for emissions, so it may have had something to do with that.
But yes, '71 is a one year only cap. Some of the earlier cars may have gotten '70 fillers, and some of the later cars may have gotten them for '72's, but if it really has a '71 filler then a '71 cap is all that will fit. And as I mentioned, the '72-76 filler necks are way easier to find (and cheaper!!!) than a '71 cap. I have an extra '74 filler for a Duster, but I don't have one for a Scamp/Dart. The later ones you can get at the local parts place.
Here's a cap reference I picked up somewhere on here, it shows the differences. I think you can use a 72-74 cap with a 75-76 filler, most of the parts references I see list them as 72-76. But I wouldn't swear on it. I do know that nothing but a '71 cap will actually work on a '71 filler. Its a pain.

Well that may be the way I have to go. I have a 75-76 now and that isnt even close to fitting. I'll keep my hopes up for the 71 cap since i dont really want to swap out the filler tube but if it comes down to that I will.
I took the picture above. The caps are all setting with the handles parallel So the difference if you look is that they are also clocked different. So the filler necks are all different.

I have looked for mine, but haven't been able to locate it. I boxed up a bunch of parts and moved them, so... I don't know. If you can get one from one of these other guys, you should probably do that. Then, I'll be able to find mine. lol

Thanks for the replies everyone, but I think Im going to just swap the filler tube to a more readily available cap.

My son has a Cali emission 70 Dart. He wanted a chrome gas cap but we didnt have any luck finding one to fit. I went to the junk yard today and got a filler tube out of a 68 Dart today problem solved. P.S. I have a cap for your car for sale. Its all blasted and ready for epoxy primer.
$65 for 71 cap or $75 for change over to 72. Your choice not many left. And that is shipping included. You need to specify for which body because the tubes are angled different at the top. Duster Demon or Dart Scamp. Paypal accepted. Steve
