I am converting my 72 dart to a 8-3/4 rear end.The car has a 360 with a 904 transmission.I have measured it up and a 48-1/2 driveshaft would be the right size. The online chart back this measurement up as well 48.60.I have a contact that has a 68 dart gt and 340/904/8-3/4 and he has a shaft for the car but it's 49 3/8 long....I don't understand how it could be different?

How are you measuring it ?
Whats your measuring points ?
I have a few different one I could compare.

If you are measuring where there isn't a shaft,, rear axle at ride position or hanging down will make some difference. 3/4 inch difference seems about right. There was a drive shaft length chart shared here long ago. Good luck

Yep, as stated your measurement will vary depending on if you're measuring U joint center-to-center or overall length, or whatever... And whether you're measuring with the suspension loaded or not.

I have done some measuring and realized that I don't have a 904 I have a 727...I feel stupid

Ok.so with the jackstands under the rear axel it looks to be about 48.5 inches center to center....with the jackstands under the frame it looks like 49 inches center to center

It happens.
I can nolonger trust my memory so others can't either but,,,
First 67 fish was slant 6 904, 7&1/4 rear. Donor was Tradesman 200, 318, 727. Drive shaft from that donor was like 3 inch dia. I want to say I had it cut to 49&1/2 to fit.
6 or 7 years later the 727 came out, 904 went in. Back to the small tube driveshaft from a parts yard. Don't know that I ever measured it's length. Anyway,,, shortly after I found this website a owner needed a shaft for 904 to 8 &3/4 rear. I had the 49&1/2 length he needed laying here.

I have a driveshaft from my 70 dart 340, 727 and 8 3/4 that Is factory. I can give you the measurement from center of u joint cap hole to same at other end as it is sitting on my bench atm.

Here are 2 1970 dart 340 driveshafts. The green one is a 4spd and measures 52" center of u joint cap to center of u joint cap. The other is for a 727 and measures 48" center of cap to center of cap. Both cars are 8 3/4 rearends.
