'72 Dart original paint

O.K., my Dart has the original paint on it and I want to clean what's there and roll the car with original patina.

Is the original paint Laquer?

What can I use to clean it without scratching it all up?

Original paint is acrylic enamel you can buff it with an electric buffer, will take some work but should shine up if it's not too far gone. Work a small area at a time and clean the pad often, don't get in a big hurry it will take some time.

Do you have experience with a high speed buffer ? You may want to look in to a D/A polisher, much more beginner friendly.

The paint is kind of thin in spots, I'm going to try to be gentle with the cleaning. Thanks, Adam, for the recommendation on the DA buffer, I figured if I tried a high speed buffer I'd burn right through to the primer

Start buy claying the paint, Just use soap and water, No need for the spray they try to sell you with it. Lots of suds, wash and clay a panel at a time.

I would use the D/A with a yellow foam pad and some Maquires 205 polish to start speed on 4, then switch to a black foam pad, same polish, speed on 3. Finish with a good wax, blue foam pad, speed on 2.

You can also use a good paint sealant if you wish, apply it with the blue pad, let it haze for about 20 minutes then wipe it off. Let it sit 24hrs before topping the sealant with wax.
