One of the problems with A-bodies is they didn't get any paint on the bottom side. They had primer only on the bottom and whatever paint that blew under the body was all they ever got. Same color always under the hood and inter fenders. I hope this helps you.

It depends on what assembly plant it was built at. I believe the LA built cars were done wit a almost black dip primer while the others were more grap.
When the cars exteriors were paint the underside got over sprayed. Then the under coating was sprayed in the wheel wells.

even though the trend is body color in every nook and cranny
