(74 duster sb 727 and 8.75 rear.) . im driving along from work . .and i hear a very loud clunking noise i bend a corner and i stop and put it in park and then back in drive . . i let the car just roll. i then hear clunking about every 3 seconds. . .then the car jerks and comes to a stop. .VERY hard Stop might i add didnt expect it.at all. . .now when i try to put car in any gear it jerks and studders real hard even nuetral rolling down the drive way. . WAT IS CAUSING THIS. .TRANS? REAREND? and how do i fix it?? thank you for your help

Sounds like your rearend is gone. You,ll need to pull the center section(pumpkin)and have it looked at by someone that knows old cars?Tranny shop?Good Luck!

jack it up put it in neutral and turn the wheels by hand and listen for noise.if you cant turn it take out the drive shaft and see if its still noisey and cluncky. if it is pull the pumpkin out and inspeckt it. look at the gears-ring gear bolts cane you turn it now.

Sounds like a broken tooth on either a ring gear or pinion. When it gets to that spot it locks up. Had that happen on a 70 Chevelle when I was a kid.
