727 missing top on manual shift shaft

the top photo is what it's suppose to look like. the second photo is what i got. went to hook up the passing gear rod and there is nothing to attach to. just have a hole in the top of the shift shaft. can anyone offer me some guidance.

Pull the pan. It'll be laying in the bottom. There is a clip and washer that is missing and allowed it to fall down.
 
yesterday i was looking for a valve body, today i picked up an e clip. thanks again redram. you guys are the best.
 
There is a small washer that goes under that clip. Over time the clip will probably eat into the seal without the washer. Those seals tend to leak on older transmissions so now would be a decent time to replace them. There is one for the shift shaft and another for the kickdown/passing gear shaft. Pretty cheap.
