is this hole in a 727 suppose to be open, i hope its just a vent and that's the end of that.

Yes, it supposed to be open you are correct it is just a vent. Most transmission have a cover over the vent hole see picture.

The 1962-1970 front pumps had the cover over the vent because the pump body had a different vent. The 1971-later pumps (which you have) had nothing there so yes that is normal. But it doesn’t hurt to put a plate over it.
