So I picked up a 68 polara (I know, not an A body) for pretty cheap because it was having transmission problems. I figured it'd be no big deal since I have a working 727 in the garage. The trans seems to be slipping very badly. Is there anyway this could be caused by the linkages not being aligned right? Or is the tranny shot. I ask because the gear selector wont go past D into 1 or 2. What could cause this? I'd hate to replace the trans if all I needed to do was some adjusting. I'm fairly certain the trans is bad but the selector not going into 1 or 2 has me wondering.

68 polara 383 w/ 727. Pretty much stock.

PS. When are we getting our C body forum?

Another thing I just noticed. When I put it in nuetral and the rear is off the ground, The wheels spin like it is in drive. ??? but they dont have enough force to move the car while on the ground. What would cause this?

There's enough friction among the trans internals, to cause the rearend to turn, if it's not held.
Is the linkage binding on something to not allow 1 and 2 gear selection?
I agree that more than likely the trans is shot and dropping the pan will tell you quickly.
