Car is 340/727 Dart. In drive, normal acceleration, shifts 1,2,3 by about 30mph, I think that's about right?? Aggressive acceleration (pedal to the floor) very sloppy, feels to me like slipping, till 3rd then pulls strongly. No way this thing will do a burn out! Slowing down, if I select 1st, nothing happens till I slightly tap the gas then it down shifts 3, 2 to 1. If I then try to pull away in 1st, it feels like I'm dragging an anchor, motor is really working against something. Fluid level is good, checked in N with engine idling, no burnt smell and reverse works fine. Would really like this thing to launch like a Mopar should! Questions......suggestions?

If it feels like it's slipping in the lower gears it probably is even in spite of the fluid looking and smelling ok. The fact that it pulls good in 3rd gear tells me the engine must be running ok. If it weren't running good it wouldn't pull as good in high gear because the faster your going the more horsepower it takes to gain speed. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like it's ready for a rebuild.

Thanks fishy, the trans was freshened 2 years ago, new steels, frictions and seals. Nothing fancy, pretty much a stock rebuild. The shift lever was changed to 4.2, a bolt in sprag added and stage 2 shift kit installed. It's a 67', the trans, shop thought the valve body was not correct for the year but that everything else looked ok. I didn't think the valve body had to be matched by year?? I'm going to try and set up the linkages (again) from scratch and see what I get. If I have to pull it I will, just want to exhaust all my options first.

Your welcome. Valve bodies don't have to be matched by year. I've seen plenty of the newer VB's with part throttle kickdown installed in a older trans. The only thing you have to make sure is to not mix lockup valve bodies with non lockup VB's and newer electronic controlled VB's. I made the assumption it was just worn out due to what info I had not knowing it was a fairly recent rebuild. Since it's not old I'd do a series of pressure tests and see how that looks. If something doesn't look kosher there drop just the valve body and air pressure test each individual clutch pack and front and rear servo's. It's possible it's just a valve body issue. Doing the pressure tests will tell you the condition of the main assy.

BTW: did it do this ever since it was rebuilt or did it work right for a while and is just now acting up?

Sorry to say, it's been like this since it was put back in the car. Pressure checks sound like the way to go.
