Im looking at buying a Big Block 727 core with the short tail shaft ( came ouy of 4x4 w/divorced transfer case ) to put in a 70 Cuda im building . Car currently has Small Block 727 in it . Are tail shafts and hsgs interchangeable ? If so ... is it a major job .. never tryed this before . Thanks

The tailshaft and housing on any 727 can be swapped onto any 727. It's how the truck guys will build a BB 727 to fit a NP205/208/231/241 Transfer Case (since the only factory 4x4 BB 727's were for divorced cases, or for the oddball NP203)

It requires a complete teardown of the transmission though, because the tailshaft is the last piece that is removed during disassembly.

The same applies for 904's (904 and 727 shafts/housings do not interchange, but the procedure is exactly the same)

Here is the process in reverse/opposite. I used the guts, shaft and housing from my MA904 (4-Cylinder 4x4) in a TF904 (Small Block RWD)

MA904 at the top, TF904 at the bottom. The MA904 had heavier internals and 5-pinion planetaries. Used the combination to build a 4x4 904 to put a Small Block in my truck.
