Hey everyone, my name is Tyler I'm fifteen from upstate New York. I am restoring a '71 swinger and I just found a 8 1/4 suregrip to replace my 7 1/4 open. The guy doesn't know what gears are in it, but its from a '73 340 duster. Does anyone know what the standard gear was for the 340 package? My guess is that they are either 3.55 or 3.54 however the ratio worked out for a 8 1/4. Thanks in advance.

3:23 or 3:55s were the std for 340 cars.

Give the drive shaft a turn and count how many times the wheel spins. 3 and 1/4 turns it's a 23 - 3 and 1/2 it's a 55

Yep 3:23 or 3:55s were the std for 340 cars
Thank you Joe Mc, was wondering myself :happy10:

Have him pull the cover and see what gear it is. It is stamped on the ring gear. Ratios that were available in 73 for an 8 1/4 were 2.45, 2.71, 3.21, and 3.55. I really don't know what the standard ratio was for a 73 340, but I am pretty sure the sure grip was an option. I would expect an open 2.71 was the most common.

Isn't funny how like when the national speed limits were lowered to 55 mph the gear ratios in new cars back then went down as well. Yeah I know to help boost mpg...why we had 55 mph speed limits. To save oil so now in 2010 we can dump millions of barrels of oil in to the sea, lol.

But common sense would say if you go slower on the freeways, you can run steeper gears in back.
