I heard that changing an open 8 1/4 to posi is no big deal. BUT I also heard that the 3.55 and smaller gears fit no problem and that the 3.91 don't fit all of them because the gears are too big. Is there any truth to this?

The 8.25 will take gears up to 4.56. There is a break where you need a new different differential. Gears 2.56 and lower use a different diff but the housing is the same. Also, axles from 1997 up use 29 spline axles verse older ones using 27.
If you decide you want a set of 3:91's. I have a spare set J-G.
