I took my diff apart just to have a boo at it and here is whut I found. It has 3.23 gears and some marks on the sure grip housing that looks like the pinion gear is touching it. I marked the marks with crushin blue and spun it but it never wiped it off. There is no end play in the pinion so I was wondering if maybe this was from an earlier problem that someone already fixed. The other thing I found a bit odd was that both of the axles have quite a bit of up and down play in them out by the hubs, but upon taking them out it doesnt look like there is any way to adjust it out Have a look at the pic,, maybe someone can help me out a bit,,,thx

You should have an adjustment collar on one of the axles unless someone have some green bearings put on there.

Looks like an earlier problem.Does it still have adjustable bearings or green??If it has end play?Maybe it,s time for some new bearings?Maybe they have already been replaced by the look of the wear marks on the pod??

Could be an old injury Jim, whats the end of the pinion gear look like for damage and is there any end play in the pinion? I can over tomorrow and have a look if you'd like.

The bearings on the axles are still the adjustable type.

Hi Axle bearings have nothing to do with holding the ring and pinion in place. they hold axles. Obviously the pinion (or a pinion) came in contact with the carrier. Either the carrier or pinion would have to move around to do that and i think that would make plenty of noise and vibration.It would also leave nasty wear marks on the gears. Do you have ample clearance between the pinion and carrier housing Bad bearings loose pinion nut all the housing bolts tight.If all that stuff looks tight plenty of pinion to carrier clearance turns smoothly and doesn't make any nasty noise going down the road. I'd run it.

Hi back again. One more thing i forgot to mention.Any metallic debree in the housing would realy say something.

Thats the marks you see after someone has changed the yoke and/or seal on a 489 and didn't reset the bearing preload properly ( repeat after me CRUSH SLEEVES SUCK )and the nut that holds the yoke on comes OFF while DRIVING down the road .

That's what Jim and I figured, yoke nut loosened or pinion bearing crapped out, the back face of the pinion looked like new cuss it probably was. This is the same rear that who ever repaired it last left the axle thrust block out on reassembly.

The sure grip had to be completely disassemble for that thrust block to be removed , which tells me that more than likely the cones had bottomed out and someone did the HALF ASSED fix to it , I'd be VERY leary of that unit ....
