bare A body 8&3/4 housing. mocking up OE axles & aftermarket axles multiple times to isolate an aftermarket axle fitment problem. have a problem getting the bearing/race to slide in. some times it goes fairly well if I hold the splined end up just the right amount but today after multiple tries the race/bearing would just start to go in then no further. what do I need to do differently here? thank you for your time. RR

Robert, I would be very suspect that the 8-3/4 housing itself may be bent. I banana shaped an 8-3/4 housing while drag racing. I never had a clue until I had difficulty inserting axles. I have a gauge to check now but you are a long ways from here in Virginia.

I will get after it again tomorrow & I will call a shop here that goes alot of that work & go from there. thank you. RR

If the center section is not installed and no seals are installed. There is no reason the axles should not go in easily.

Post some photos of the ends and the bearings.

Some times bolting on a drum backwards gives some leverage

I have a fixture to straighten 8 3/4 housings. Will the axle go in without the gear in it? Is it both sides or just one?

1. Could be your axle spines are not aligned per side in the suregrip.

2. If your using green bearings without removing the equalizer pin for the axles one will bottom out on the equalizer if the other axle is installed. Remove the other axle and see it it now goes in.

the pumpkin is out. tapered bearings. I have a problem with both sides but I have been able to get both dr diff axles in but it takes many many tries. also I cannot get the dr diff axles to go in all the way NOW WITH THE PUMPKIN IN PLACE (welded spiders/open rear). the dr diff and OE axles are both 28" long but the locking collar is spaced slightly differently along the axle length with the diff axles than the OE axles but not enough to be causing the bearing/race to just start to go in & wont go any further into the pumpkin. I cannot get the OE axles to go in at all. neither axles will go all the way into the pumpkin (I hope that all makes sense!)

are your seals driven in to the proper depth? if not, the retaining collar may be bottom on them and preventing you from seating the bearing.

pictures would help immensely...

I took the seals out to make some progress with this. I would take pics but I am having a camera problem & cant upload pics to the computer. the geek squad at best buy said the camera is Ok but there's a problem on my computer but I am a tech newbie. I will go over there today & work on it again
