I am looking to buy an 8 3/4 diff. 489 case. Sure grip. The guy selling doesn't know the axle ratio. He says there is a number:80-7301 stamped on the ring gear. Does this indicate the ratio?
I know I could ask him to count turns on the pinion. Really don't trust that method from a random stranger.

Should be stamped right on the ring gear. 3.23 3.55 2.76 ... or the likes. There is a series of numbers on the ring gear, but the ratio is as well.

The seller should be able to rotate the ring gear to find the stampings & take a photo.....or.....One can count the teeth on the ring gear and divide it by the number of teeth on the pinion. (Mark the first tooth counted so you don't lose track.)

Is it a cone type or clutch type, if you care.

Also, since the seller has seen the ring gear that means it has been apart, center section removed from housing, axles pulled etc. if you care.

Seller said there was not a 3.23, 3.55 etc stamping anywhere.
Moot point now, fellas. He said it's sold to someone else.

Do you have a center section now? the Clutch type carrier is available new and not that much.
