8 3/4 rear need help

help..im not a rear end person..i just picked up a b body 8 3/4 and the person i bot it from says it is good..yet when i turn the yoke,neither wheel turns..i can hold both from turning..open diff[can see spider gears]and a 3.55 ihave in the garage is the same way...can one of you diff experts tell me whats up,or do i have two piles of junk..both are 741 units and both are out where i can work on them..help please..jim

If its an open when you turn the yolk one side should spin forwards and one should go backwards. DONT EVER, use a wrench or impact to turn the nut on the yolk to turn the rear. You could tighten that nut more than it is meant to and result in bearing failure. (ask me how i know):banghead:
