8&3/4 seal installation

if you don't have the seals out yet... scribe a line on the tube or take a measurement at the face of how far in it is. if there's no damage or wear to the seal surface on the axle then you can just drive them right back in at the same depth.

i use a either a ginormous socket or the hazard freight seal driver kit (the one with a steel handle and aluminum discs).

don't go full ham on it, you can jump the inner lip and reef it in too far.

seals are out. I see the lip in there an inch or so back where the dia changes slightly. not green bearings. so I go slightly past the lip?

^^^ excellent. Thank you! he did not pack the back side of the seal with grease to keep the spring from being dislodged when driven in which I had always thought was a good plan. is this needed?

sure. it's just something people do because that's a thing they picked up along the way from some gray beard or how their dad taught them. like how i only eat out of green dumpsters because my father only ate out of green dumpsters as his father and father's father did.

don't manhandle the goods too much and *usually* you'll be all right.

I have never grease packed a spring and have never popped one either...

OK I will let it slide & just be carefull
Won't hurt anything if you grease them up a bit to be safe, but I've never had one throw off. Wish the pic showed what size that 3/4" drive socket is, let me look at when I was doing the Swinger or the '64 x 440's rear end... maybe I have one.

Edit.. still can't read it.. 2 1/8" maybe. More than one way to skin the cat... just make sure you use something to drive it that is out to the OD.
